G'day

this month the call for submissions for SoTEL 2019 closes. Get that submission in quick!

Having returned to NZ in early October I was pleased to see the veggies were in good spirits. Now it's down to feeding them so they can feed me in time for Xmas; signs are upon us already!

SoTEL 2019 submissions are beginning to increase with several from international sources which is great! Thom Reeves the Key Trendsetter has posted a video outlining what he will present and Bio's of other trendsetters will be posted shortly. It's gonna be a great event!

An interesting report I read this week was around the deconstruction of the largest Polytechnic in New Zealand. Sweeping changes initiated by bean counters and non academics has disastrous results on teaching, learning, the tutors and the students; surprise , surprise. Hopefully the institution will now rise from the ashes and recognise the importance of collaboration between tutors and students in the learning process and associated authentic learning environments.

In the posting this month , there are links to Constructivism, Digital and Blended learning, Learning in three dimensions, Jisc digital capabilities, Worksheets, Cognitive science of education, Open and online courses, Augmented and Virtual reality, Conferences, New Zealand happenings and the odd one out.

December in NZ heralds a mass exodus from academia.

1.Blended Learning for the Adult Education Classroom. Well written and constructed guide to the fundamental principles of blended learning and how they can be applied to adult education. Some useful guides, ideas , applications and suggestions for making blended learning work for your adult learners.

http://app.essentialed.com/resources/blended-learning-teachers-guide-web.pdf

2. How to Design and Scale Digital and Blended Learning Programs to Improve Employment and Entrepreneurship Outcomes. A thought provoking report which highlights some of the issues around the development of skills associated with digital tools. Extract from the report: 'The question is not so much whether digital learning is effective, but rather how can a digital learning program be designed and implemented effectively'. Worth perusing to maybe get some answers.

http://tinyurl.com/yb8rqpk6

3. Constructivism as a Paradigm for Teaching and Learning. A comprehensive guide to all things constructivism. This site takes you on a journey through explanation, demonstration, exploration and implementation of constructivism in teaching and learning. There is a wealth of resources on this site (a few broken links unfortunately) Worth perusing.

https://www.thirteen.org/edonline/concept2class/constructivism/index.html

4. From the Jisc stable a new Building digital capabilities website. As usual an excellent resource and addition to the Jisc portfolio of guides and advice related to all things education.

https://digitalcapability.jisc.ac.uk

5. Learning in Three Dimensions:Report on the EDUCAUSE HP Campus of the Future Project.
An informative and interesting report from Educause and partner HP on the use of extended reality. The key findings highlight some very positive outcomes from the use of extended, virtual and augmented reality in education.

https://library.educause.edu/~/media/files/library/2018/8/ers1805.pdf?la=en

6.The Cognitive Science of Education (14 Part Series) You will need a lot of quality time to read and study this series. The topics vary in length and cover a lot of interesting and useful ground, highlighting and providing explanations on specific aspects of cognitive science and education. Extract from the site:
'This sequence of posts aggregates and simplifies current research; psychology textbooks; conversations with clinicians; an original, Big Data study; and works by artists, designers, and more into a clear and useful overview. Whatever our environment or pedagogy or style, we learn through the same cognitive processes and knowledge of these processes can only to deepen our understanding of and strengthen our ability to do the good work of education'. Says it all. Worth taking the time.

http://www.senseandsensation.com/p/the-cognitive-science-of-education.html7

8. Worksheetworks. A valuable , versatile and rich and comprehensive resource for all levels of education. I visit this site often to generate worksheets that enable students to learn both the basics and advanced aspects of a range of subjects. We have been here before , but it's always worth a revisit. Try your calculator skills.

https://www.worksheetworks.com

9.AR and VR: How Immersive Learning Technology Is Bringing Education and Training Into the Future. An interesting article looking at some of the ways different people and organisations are using mixed reality for education and training.

http://tinyurl.com/ybrpu39z

10.CANVAS network provides a searchable database of open and online courses from colleges, universities and organisations worldwide. Many of those listed are FREE Moocs or similar.
Might be worth perusing so you can enroll in something you've always wanted to do.

https://www.canvas.net

11. Conferences

11.1 Ascilite:35th International Conference on Innovation, Practice and Research in the Use of Educational Technologies in Tertiary Education.
Deakin University, Waterfront Campus, Geelong, Victoria, Australia. 25th to 28th November 2018

http://2018conference.ascilite.org

11.2 6th International Conference on Educational Technologies 2019, 8 to 10 February 2019, Hong Kong.
This is a blind peer reviewed conference. Authors are invited to submit their papers in English through the conference submission system by October 8, 2018. Submissions must be original and should not have been published previously.

G'day

this is coming to you from London,UK, so not sure what the veggies are up to back in NZ; they were all right when I left. Now in the tender mercies of the rest of the family. Hi Ho

This month has been busy as the organisation of SoTEL 2019 ramps up and submissions begin to arrive (at last). Our merry band of external reviewers have been excellent, keeping well within the 72hour deadline for return of reviews; great stuff!

Why is it that academia leaves everything to the last minute, before making a submission? (not everyone of course, but not far off). With Prof Thom Reeves leading the trendsetters at SOTEL 2019, it's already gonna be better than this year.So far most of our sponsors have also returned, for which we are extremely grateful.

Augmented and Virtual reality plus artificial intelligence continue to dominate my reading matter, especially in the mobile domain. All very interesting and in lots of ways a potential boost for enhancing and supporting student learning through technology.

In the posting this month there are links to Digital experiences, Teaching science, Google classroom, Instructional design, Mobile apps infographic, Engaging online learners, Web literacy, Flipgrid, Rubric for eLearning Tool Evaluation, Universal design for learning, Conferences, New Zealand happenings and the odd one out.

Hope you find something useful.

1. Jisc Digital experience insights survey 2018: findings from students in UK further and higher education: Authors: Tabetha Newman, Helen Beetham and Sarah Knight

This survey provides a very useful snapshot of the use of the digital domain by students in the learning environments in UK Higher and further education. As is usual with Jisc reports, it is a well structured and informative document with a range of comments, analysis, key messages, suggestions and insights relating to the student experience and expectations of digital technologies.
Whilst focussed on the UK educational environments, much of what is presented should resonate elsewhere in the world.

Well worth reading. taking note and bookmarking.

G'day
must be getting old, the year seems to be going faster than usual. I've been working with the SoTEL 2019 committee to get the organisation up and running. First call for submissions has just been released (see below for more details). It's gomng to be a great event!

The 'Gogy' family keep popping up in various articles I have read recently; they all seem to be thriving. Father Pedagogy looks after the children using an instructivist bent and Uncle Androgogy keeps the adults on their toes using a constructivist approach. As for nephew Heutagogy, he really knows how to learn. Just hope none of this activity gets in the way of real learning.I'm not going to comment on the new kids on the block, Pada, Poda and Mabagogy.

Garden is still lying fallow. Did manage to recover about 5Kg potatoes (wild grown). Seed planting is next on the agenda.

In this posting there are links to Learning outcomes, VR and AR, Learning styles,Google Course Kit, Heutagogy Community, Perspectives on Technology, Go Authentic , future of education, Horizon report preview, Conferences, New Zealand Happenings and the odd one out.

That's it until September

1. The Myth of 'Learning Styles'
A popular theory that some people learn better visually or aurally keeps getting debunked.A good read whatever side of the fence you are on.

https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/04/the-myth-of-learning-styles/557687/

2. Defining, writing and applying learning outcomes. A very useful publication from the office of the European Union. Should find some useful information and help embedded in the pages.

3. VR and AR: Driving a Revolution in Medical Education & Patient Care. This article was released last year. With the current rise and rise of the use of AR and VR in all sorts of educational disciplines, this is worth a read to see what is and will be happening, maybe in your discipline?

http://tinyurl.com/yamsrxm6

4. Introducing Course Kit:Course Kit is a new set of tools to help instructors improve how they create, collect, and give feedback on coursework. Interesting and potentially very useful development from Google.

6.PERSPECTIVES ON TECHNOLOGY, RESOURCES AND LEARNING,PRODUCTIVE CLASSROOM PRACTICES,
EFFECTIVE TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. An interesting and comprehensive report which examines, explains and comments on various perspectives associated with technology in learning and teaching.
Extract from the site: 'Throughout this report we have advocated a holistic iterative approach to technology-enabled effective learning. Technology must be fit for purpose and support effective approaches to learning undertaken by teachers and pupils. Teachers' inquiry should be guided by pedagogical insights and an overall sound theory of change'.

http://tinyurl.com/ydanj2gw

7. The Heutagogy Community of Practice: This site provides a raft of information on the subject of 'Heutagogy', the theory and practice of self-determined learning. Nice clean site with some interesting perspective and articles.

https://heutagogycop.wordpress.com

G'Day

so far I haven't been followed by the rain. Almost 7 weeks with only one real downpour in Regent's Park; Norway was mainly dry as well. Now it's back to NZ and getting the hedges in order and attending to the vege plot.. in the rain:-(

Not a lot of time spent on things learning technology, although have read through quite a few reports and guides. Constructive alignmentlways been a (Gibbs 1982) is a focus as we speak. It's a very useful and defining concept which enables the creation of learning materials and environments that aim to support achieve real learning and understanding by the adult learner. I've been working on some sessions for educators who, through professional development events, help others to develop skills in facilitating learning in essentially student and self centred environments. Many have contributed with excellent ideas and suggestions and outcomes from evidence based practice; lots more to do.Hi ho.

In this posting there are links to Google resources, visualisation Periodic Table, better questions, faculty resistance, online learning design, apprenticeship toolkit, social media and online learning, padagogy wheel, digital storytelling, students as partners, conferences, New Zealand happenings and the odd one out.

August is not far away.

1. How Helping Students to Ask Better Questions Can Transform Classrooms. Common sense stuff which sometimes tends to be forgotten when it comes to the power of questioning for learning.

http://tinyurl.com/ybvs379a

2. How often do you use the resources provided by Google? Do you know what they are and know how to use them? This site provides you with all the links you need to learn about and use the resources. Ranges from basic to advanced. Worth perusing.

http://www.livebinders.com/play/play/3803

If you have time explore the huge range of 'binders' on the site (over 1 million). May be one that you are looking for. Try 'featured Livebinders' first.

3.Periodic table of visualisation methods. Here is a novel idea and one that could be useful in many different ways. Provides a wide range of charts in numerous subject areas. Not sure where they got some of the information from, but lots of fascinating stuff .

http://www.visual-literacy.org/periodic_table/periodic_table.html

4.The Effectiveness of Online Learning Depends on Design. Nicely constructed article with some useful comments and information to help guide the design and use of your online activities with your students.

5.Using Social Media for Online Learning. A well written and presented 'newsletter'. There are some clear guides, ideas and suggestions and reasons for embracing the use of social media in online learning. Have a look at other resources on the site.[Canadian author]

http://tinyurl.com/yd47qyww

6. 3 Strategies for Overcoming Faculty Resistance to Active Learning Techniques: Whenever change is on the horizon and it moves people out of their comfort zone, resistance will occur. Dealing with resistance and encouraging involvement can sometimes be daunting. This article is a good read and might give you some ideas.

http://tinyurl.com/yd58lg9b

7. Apprenticeship Toolkit from the JISC stable. Well thought out guide from the Jisc stable. As usual of high quality and relevant to today's learners. Extract from the site:
'This Apprenticeship Toolkit shows how effective application of digital technologies can support the delivery of apprenticeships by colleges and training providers (including employer-providers). It also covers new standards and end point assessment (England only)'

http://apprenticeship-toolkit.data.alpha.jisc.ac.uk

8. Digital Storytelling in the Liberal Arts. There seems to be an upsurge in the use of digital storytelling. There are lots of rejoices around and I found this one to be well structured, comprehensive and informative

http://dwlibrary.macalester.edu/digitalstorytelling/

G'day
May has been a quiet time for me. Only working on some presentations around train the trainer stuff and contemplating SoTEL 2019. The garden is 'neglected' for a couple of months whilst my wife and I enjoy the delights of London and Norway. I think the dog is missing us, but my son is doing a good job (I think) of making sure he attends to her every need (move over dog!) I'm missing not be involved in mid term exams (not). Be plenty to do on my return.

G'day

May, the force be with you.Things are beginning to take shape for the coming year. Off to the UK to catch up with the rellies and a trip to Norway. Then back to helping with the organisation of SoTEL 2019 and a 'train the trainer' project for China. So should be busy. Had time to look at some of the links in depth this month. I always like a good debate and strong opinion that challenges the accepted and provides people with an opportunity to think differently or even change their mind; difficult for some academics. There's some meaty stuff in the ' The Con in Constructivism' to make your eyes water.

Talking about water, haven't needed much for the garden as we have been blessed with some torrential downpours. Good job I spread the fertiliser prior to the event.Hi Ho.

In the posting this month there are links to online teaching, Conscious Competence Learning Model, con in constructivism, training material guide, workplace instruction guide, learning transfer evaluation model, digital capabilities, professional learning, OERu, science and engineering resources, New Zealand happenings, Conferences and the odd one out.

Plenty to keep you occupied as the rain continues to fall.

1.The CON in Constructivism and other interesting points of view. An unusual Website with a whole range of opinion pieces on various aspects of education, educational theory, philosophy and many ways of doing things differently in education. I quite enjoyed reading some of these articles and there is definitely an element (actually many) of truth in several. At least they provide some time for thought provoking and reflection. Take your pick.

http://www.improve-education.org/id55.html

2. The Learning Transfer Evaluation Model (Developed by Will Thalheimer with help from others. Version 11a. © Copyright 2018. You are free to share this document as is.)
An interesting new evaluation model which has a lot of merit methinks. Worth perusing , contemplating and considering.

http://tinyurl.com/yaewhm4k

If you want to read more from Will about the LTEM model, go to

https://www.worklearning.com/2018/02/14/the-learning-transfer-evaluation-model-ltem/

3. ePosts: An introduction to effective online teaching. This is a well written and constructed 'tool' for all educators involved in the teaching and learning environments of the 21st century. Excellent information, guides and material. Well worth downloading.Explore the companion booklets. Of course they are KIWI made.

http://tinyurl.com/y6whbb73

4. Conscious Competence Learning Model. A very interesting model and one I must admit I haven't thought about for quite a while; Maslow's learning ladder comes to mind. Seems its been around for hundreds of years. There's a lot to this model so you will need some time to absorb and digest. Worth perusing and gaining some insights to the thinking of others.

http://tinyurl.com/ybp9h8vu

5. Building digital capabilities: The six elements defined. This is another one of those important, useful and well structured reports from the JISC stable. Although primarily aligned to the Building digital capability project for the UK higher and further education, the principles can be applied in any country. Worth reading and absorbing the key points.

http://repository.jisc.ac.uk/6611/1/JFL0066F_DIGIGAP_MOD_IND_FRAME.PDF

6.From Sweden: Developing Training Material Guide:Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) Dr Mo Hamza
A well written, structured and informative guide which states '.includes information on the main steps and stages in sequence of designing a training course all the way to evaluation for feedback into further development'. Useful resource.

https://www.msb.se/RibData/Filer/pdf/26433.pdf

7. From Finland; Guide on Implementing Workplace Instructor Training. Useful complementary guide to the Swedish publication. Another good resource.

http://www.oph.fi/download/155761_guide_on_implementing_workplace_instructor_training.pdf

8. OERu. Looking for something to do and improve your skills and knowledge? OERu has been around for a few years now and is continuing to develop new micro courses Digital Citizenship is one that has been recommended . There are lots of new offerings to choose from, e.g: Dimensions of Openness in Education; The eLearning Maturity Model (eMM) and Technology Diffusion and Models of Change in Education. Those of you in New Zealand will recognise some of the facilitators of the courses, as Otago Polytechnic is heavily involved.

https://oeru.org/

9. Resources in Science and Engineering Education. I like this site for its short, pithy and useful comments on areas of teaching that cause angst for most of us sometime or another; applies to most subject disciplines methinks. Richard Felder is an advocate of 'learning styles'; I'm not. Brackets, boxes , hairstyles and suits come to mind. However, he has lots of links to show they do make a difference to teaching and learning. Have a browse through his 'random thoughts'. Some good tips hidden amongst them [No.72 Sermons for Grumpy Campers, is interesting]

http://www4.ncsu.edu/unity/lockers/users/f/felder/public/

10. OMG Becky. PD is Getting So Much Better!!: 9 alternative models for teacher professional learning. A useful insight into how you might look differently at the way professional development is provided or 'conducted' at your institution. Might give you a few ideas for change and reward.

https://www.cultofpedagogy.com/pd/

G'day

No fooling,April is upon us and the eager beaver students are back at Uni adding to the March madness on the roads in NZ. The 'Free' first year at Uni doesn't seem to have had a major impact on enrolments; most institutions indicate little change in normal patterns.

I've had a bit of time to reflect on some of the excellent presentations at SoTEL 2018.In doing so I came across a quote from Albert Einstein which I thought supported the tenet of the excellent trendsetter presentation from Prof John Clayton from Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi He challenged the audience to believe that in an educational environment in which students take responsibility for their own learning, you don't need a 'Teacher'. The quote from Einstein: 'I never teach my pupils, I only provide the conditions in which they can learn'.
Couldn't think of any thing more appt .

And for those of you who are keen and passionate about making a difference to your student learning through enhancement with technology, SoTEL 2019 will take place in February 2019; watch this space and be prepared to participate.

Apart from the work stuff, the garden is settling down. The veggie plot is lying fallow as it awaits the autumn plantings. The dog is enjoying extra time on the beach now the summer restriction have been lifted. Hi Ho

In the posting this month there are links to education blogs, learning outcomes, AR and VR, solving real problems, cognitive theory and multimedia, impact of AI, micro learning, open education, Bloom's basement and edtech, engaging adult learners, conferences, NZ happenings and the odd one out.

May is fast approaching.

1.Students Need to Solve Real Problems. Nice article . Applies to all levels of education. Some useful insights, comments, guides, examples and analysis

http://www.spencerauthor.com/pblproblems/

2. From the Internet of Things for all:The Current State of Augmented and Virtual Reality. Easy read article on various aspects of AR and VR and what the current trends are in development and use. Lots of other interesting stuff on this site, which is worth exploring.

https://www.iotforall.com/current-state-augmented-virtual-reality/

3. There are hundreds of blogs on education. Occasionally I have come across one that I think has a lot of merit and is worth exploring. This one by Daniel T. Willingham a professor of cognitive psychology, is one such blog. The article on 'A new idea to promote transfer' is worth reading as are several other articles on his site.

http://tinyurl.com/ycvdb4np

4.Defining, writing and applying learning outcomes:A European handbook. With the main focus on vocational education and training, this very comprehensive handbook could be a very useful resource for all those involved in education and training. Well written and structured and worth downloading and adding to your resource bank

http://tinyurl.com/y96wpvlr

5.Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning. Extract from site: The cognitive theory of multimedia learning presents principles to guide designers of multimedia and e-learning in the presentation of textual, graphical, video and audio information for optimal learning. Each principle is backed by research comparing different multimedia learning conditions to determine which results in better student learning (Clark & Mayer, 2011). Worth exploring and digesting.

https://sites.google.com/site/cognitivetheorymmlearning/home

6. Edtech Is Trapped in Ben Bloom's Basement. Interesting opinion piece on the application of Bloom's taxonomy to education technology, indicating that perhaps changes are necessary in implementation in the technology enhanced learning environment.

http://tinyurl.com/y8nzm3yc

7. Exploring the impact of artificial intelligence on teaching and learning in higher education: Popenici and Kerr Research and Practice in Technology Enhanced Learning (2017) 12:22. A paper making a useful contribution to the concept and possible impact of using AI in higher education.

http://tinyurl.com/y89wy4cl

8. Engaging Adult Learners: A well written article on the nature of adult learners and the teaching approaches that can be used to facilitate learning. Not a lot of new stuff , but certainly worth a read to reinforce your own practice or maybe even change it.

http://tinyurl.com/y9n96pql

9.Open Education: International Perspectives in Higher Education:A useful oversight of Open Education and its possible future pathways to enable free education for all.

http://tinyurl.com/y9rszuv8

10. Microlearning: a strategy for ongoing professional development. I read this paper the other day and inspite of the fact it was produced a few years ago , it stands up to scrutiny in the elearning environments of today. A useful table comparing macro and micro learning plus some useful comments and overview of micro learning make this worth a read.

G'day
February has gone in a flash. Maybe because my main focus was on SOTEL 2018; it went off with a real bang. The 'Trendsetters' were both challenging and provocative and generated lots of discussion. The erudite and hard working committee had excellent feedback and a clear desire for a repeat next year. The presentations I went to were of quality and highly relevant to the ever evolving technology enhanced student learning environment. Delegates had lots of takeaways from each session. The food was very good too! It was great to meet the representatives of the sponsors who made a positive contribution to the collegial networking and of course to the success of the event.

Now there's a bit of normality for a while so I can get into the garden. The hedges look like an excerpt from 'Day of the Triffids'.

In the posting this month there are links to online learning survey, artificial intelligence, learning analytics, soft skills, lesson planner, correcting summative questions, digital literacy charter, digital literacy framework, blended learning, immersive reading experience , conferences and the odd one out.

April will not fool any of us ; it's just around the corner.

Until then.

1.If you are interested in how another country is using online learning, have a look at this report, you might find it very useful.(Thanks to Tony Bates for the information about the report).

Tracking online learning in Canadian universities and colleges
A survey of online learning and distance education in Canadian public post secondary education.
This study provides a snapshot of online learning and distance education in Canadian post-secondary education, based on a survey of 72 universities and 131 colleges and CEGEPs across Canada in 2017. The aim is to repeat the survey in future years.

https://onlinelearningsurveycanada.ca/

If you would like further analysis and informed comment on online learning in Canada have a look at the following posts from Tony Bates; very interesting, perceptive and enlightening.

Comparing online learning in k12 and post secondary education in Canada

2.Design your class[RMIT lesson planner]. Here is a neat, simple and effective tool for creating your lesson plan. Drag and drop from the list on the right hand side of the page and design your learning experience for your students. Each 'element' that you drag and drop has some useful notes and resources and provides an indication of time. You can print or export your lesson. Good stuff.

3.Learning Analytics and Educational Data Mining for Learning Impact: Student intervention guide.
There is an increasing amount of literature and reports on the use of learning analytics; some useful guides are also available. I liked this particular resource because of its straight forward approach and clear guidelines .

http://tinyurl.com/y7vrzsgo

You can get even more useful information from the parent site:

http://tinyurl.com/y7nt9tac

4.A Guide to Soft Skills. There's has been a lot of talk lately around the need for facilitating the development of soft skills whilst students are in higher education (or even before).Employers say that even with a worthwhile degree under their belt, potential employees don't appear to have honed their people (soft) skills . This guide is free and worth having in your resource bank.

5. Teaching in Blended Learning Environments:Creating and Sustaining Communities of Inquiry. (This publication is licensed under a Creative Commons License, Attribution Noncommercial No Derivative Works 2.5 Canada).
First published in 2013, this 'book' is available as a free download from the Aupress site in Canada. It is a useful addition to resources on the subject of Blended learning. Well written and informative.

http://tinyurl.com/y9bwhgvr

6. Digital Charter developments in the UK. This document may be of interest to you as it has implications for ongoing use of digital technologies in education.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/digital-charter

When you have read the Charter , read the opinion piece:

A quiet revolution: the Digital Charter is an opportunity to strike a new deal with online platforms.
Some thought provoking comments and analysis.

http://tinyurl.com/ybhb9qb2

7. Digital Literacy Framework from the Open University in the UK. A valuable and useful resource . Worth reviewing and digesting. Produced in 2012. Does it still stand up to scrutiny and is it keeping pace with technological change?

8. KIWI: Creating an immersive reading experience. I suppose I picked on this one because of its title, must have something to do with New Zealand? Actually, no, but it's the project that's of real interest. Another useful approach to implementing Augmented and Virtual reality into the learning experience for students. 'Interaction designer' is a new title for me.

http://www.elushika.com/portfolio/items/kiwi/

9. How AI will destroy Education. An interesting opinion piece as AI begins to gather momentum all over the place (or so it seems). Some of the other articles on this site are also worth perusing.

10. Quantext: Designed by teachers for teachers, Quantext has been designed for educators to quickly and simply identify and fix ambiguous or confusing questions, address common misconceptions before summative assessments and track how well students are learning the language of a specific discipline. Quantext has been released under an open source software license and the developers are keen to hear from teachers who would like to pilot Quantext. A free demonstration system is available at:

G'Day

January over already and now it's time to get ready for the student stampede, especially as they can have the first year at tertiary in NZ FREE! Someone needs their head read on that one. Maybe 'Free' for the third year, when they have shown some commitment to their studies would be a better bet; fairer to those already on their way to the second and third year studies. In my experience, many first year Uni students are too busy trying to get their tongues down each other's throats to think about studying anything useful!

A relevant quote from someone unknown but obviously a bright brain: 'Politicians and nappies have one thing in common, they both should be changed regularly and for the same reason!'[possibly quite topical, considering the NZ PM's recent announcement about her pregnancy]

An element of truth: 'A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have' (Thomas Jefferson 1743 -1826) Perception is sometimes more than nine tenths of reality; or is it the other way around?

The Government Pantomime is underway (or maybe it's a fairy tale), It's called, Jacinderella. She won't be able to go to the Ball as you can't buy a Pumpkin for love or money;maybe the fairy godmother will come to her rescue.(NB: a Pumpkin (if you can afford one) in this context would be considered a vehicle and therefore subject to the 10 cents extra fuel surcharge)

To more important things, SoTEL 2018 is just around the corner and things are shaping up very well. If you haven't registered by 7th February, you're going to miss out on the event of the year in NZ!
Haven't mentioned the garden, however, all is blooming and producing organic veggies, Garlic disappointing in size (didn't feed it enough) but strong flavour. Rain is persisting as we speak.

In the posting this month there are links to education future frontiers, digital strategies, evidence based learning, digital transformation, creative teaching, better feedback, designing learning and assessment, using laptops in class,,competency education, web accessibility guidelines, conferences , NZ happenings and the odd one out.

That's it until the next eWatch comes marching in.

1.Digital Strategy in Education. It seems that a major focus for education is lots of things 'digital' including literacy , numeracy, analytics and more.
This is an interesting article which leads onto the next in this digest.

https://www.institutefordigitaltransformation.org/digital-strategy-in-education/

2. Digital Transformation in Higher Education. A research report on the impact of digital transformation in education and its future. Extract from the report:'There is no doubt that higher education transformation is already underway, with every university leader indicating they are at least part way through their digital journey'. Where is your institution on the journey, who and what is driving the change and will it make the difference you think it will ?

http://tinyurl.com/y8f2f3gc

3. Designing learning and assessment in a digital age. Just released, another excellent guide from the people at JISC. This time with a real focus on designing learning and assessment.

https://www.jisc.ac.uk/guides/designing-learning-and-assessment-in-a-digital-age

4. EDUCATION: FUTURE FRONTIERS: The implications of AI, automation and 21st century skills needs. An interesting discussion paper from the NSW Department of Education in Australia. Raises some interesting questions on the future of Artificial Intelligent systems and their impact on a variety of areas but with a specific focus on education.

5. Torrance Incubation Model of Creative Teaching and Learning (TIM)
Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences Media and Arts Sequence.
This is quite a fascinating document, Although produced in 2011 it is highly relevant in the teaching and learning environments today.
Extract from the document: 'The Torrance Incubation Model of Creative Teaching and Learning can be applied to a lesson, unit or project. The application of TIM and the identification of a specific creativity skill is an effective way to teach creativity, without impacting the teaching of core objectives or curriculum content'.
Clearly explained in three stages. Well worth perusing if you haven't seen or heard of it before.

7. Laptops Are Great. But Not During a Lecture or a Meeting. An interesting and thought provoking article/ opinion piece in the New York Times. What do you think? Is the research accurate? Is it an all encompassing blanket statement?

http://tinyurl.com/y9cadtzc

8. The Association for Authentic, Experiential and Evidence-Based Learning (AAEEBL) ePortfolio Review (AePR): Assessment Practices. This is an interesting and I believe somewhat useful journal. This particular edition examines various aspects of assessment.

10.ACCESSIBILITY. This site , produce by Penn State University, explains how to ensure Web pages and online documents can be made usable for users with different disabilities. Very useful with some very comprehensive excellent information on a wide range of areas for creating material on the Web, enabling better access for those with disabilities. Well worth exploring.

G'day

Christmas on the horizon so over this side of the globe , exams are almost over and things are slowing down, for some. Beaches beckon, hedges need clipping, potatoes need digging up and so it goes on. However, have found time to put together the preliminary programme for the SoTEL 2018 Symposium , and it's looking great.

I've also read through quite a nunber of different reports, some of which are included in this posting. Professional development (or lack of it) is something I've always been interested in, especially at a tertiary level. Seems to me that if you have a degree you must be able to teach. How wrong can you be. Professional development , consitent focused and relevant is essential if students are to reap the benefits of effective facilitation of learning.
Rant over

In the posting this month there are links to heart of learning and teaching, professional development. open education, instructional design kit, free lessons, micro credentials, digital literacy. PhD advice, conferences, nz events and the odd one out

Have a relaxing holiday and try not to eat too many festive goodies, all at once

1. Professional development to enable teachers to learn about, use and integrate digital technology into their classrooms or student learning spaces. A hardy annual. Never enough time, focus , money . commitment to making it happen. Tony Bates
Tony Bates
often decries the lack of attention to enabling educators to become proficient in the effective and efficient use of technology to enhance learning. Here are a couple of approaches that could make a difference if they were universally applied (at least someone appears to be trying):

Strategies for training or supporting teachers to integrate technology into the classroom

http://tinyurl.com/y762km3b

2. Competency based education as a force for equity. An informative case study focused on adult learning and issues associated with competency based education.

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cbe2.1040/full

3.The Heart of Learning and Teaching:Compassion, Resiliency, and Academic Success. A very comprehensive booklet with lots of important and relevant information in relation to students and what affects their learning and how teachers could teach to deal with many issues they face. Although it has a USA focus, almost certainly a lot of what is discussed and recommend applies across any teaching and learning level and area. Well worth perusing.

http://www.k12.wa.us/compassionateschools/pubdocs/TheHeartofLearningandTeaching.pdf

4. Instructional designer Starter Kit. It's all here. Well at least one way of approaching instructional design (I much prefer learning design). Some useful stuff.

https://learningandeducationnewsnetwork.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/instructional-design-starter-kit.pdf

AND if you want to keep thinking, and experimenting have a read of 'Designing e3 (effective, efficient, engaging) instruction'.

http://mdavidmerrill.com/Papers/Designing%20e3_instruction.pdf

5. Oppia is Finnish for 'to learn'. This site says: 'By creating a set of free, high-quality, demonstrably effective lessons with the help of educators from around the world, Oppia aims to provide students with quality education, regardless of where they are or what traditional resources they have access to: So far, educators have created more than 11,000 of these lessons, which we call explorations. And they serve almost 430,000 students worldwide'.

There is certainly some very useful lessons, some through animations, on this site. Worth exploring and using.

https://www.oppia.org/library

6.Empathy Field Guide from the Institute of Design at Stanford. This was produced a few years ago but I think the information it contains is still relevant and useful. What think you ?

http://tinyurl.com/yaph7orp

7.Open Education, Open Questions. A thought provoking article from EDUCAUSE review. What do we really mean by 'Open'? It's more complicated than it looks but quite achievable with perseverance and grit!

https://er.educause.edu/articles/2017/10/open-education-open-questions

8. 2017 Digital Literacy Impact Study: An NMC Horizon Project Strategic Brief examines how digital literacy training in higher education affects the occupational success of postgraduate learners as they enter the workforce. Some interesting data derived from examining three models of digital literacy required for skill development and relevant learning experiences and how they have impacted on the daily life of graduates in the workplace.

9. 'So long, and thanks for the Ph.D.!' Original version 1997, last revised February 2017. I had a quick skim of this article and then read a bit deeper; I quite liked it. A lot of home truths and some practical and useful hints and suggestions about making sure you at least attempt to reach your goal . Lots could be applied to much that one does in life.

https://www.cs.unc.edu/~azuma/hitch4.html

G'Day

just returned from an interesting trip to China. Did the Great Wall and of course the Terracotta Warriors; both quite remarkable. China itself was also an eyeopener. It is definitely planing for the future and I was was impressed by their very modern major cities , airports and general infrastructure. Security at internal airports was far greater than that I encountered on International flights!. I also encountered the wall of people and the great firewall of China; can't use Google over there.

Returned to a jungle in the garden. Everything has gone bonkers. Hi Ho.

Anyway it's back to the grindstone and helping to make sure SoTEL is a real success. Open to all, by the way.

This edition of the Watch (a bit shorter due to having some R&R) includes links to professional development, digital learning, inclusive teaching, technology enhanced learning guide, living touch screen, the use of etextbooks,OER knowledge cloud,Journal for Students as Partners, accessibility, ESL resources, conferences, NZ Happenings and the odd one out.

Xmas bells are already ringing in my ears, for the next edition.

1.Inclusive teaching: from RMIT University in Australia. I have always been a strong advocate and supporter of inclusivity in teaching and learning. This series of guides from RMIT are very useful and informative.

http://tinyurl.com/y7jf86ss

2.Digital learning. A set of comprehensive resources from the online learning consortium. Part of a wide range of growing resources from practitioners in the field. Worth perusing the pages and gleaning some useful information on a variety of topics. Maybe even become a member and contribute.

https://onlinelearningconsortium.org/read/digital-learning/

Interesting article on mobile learning:

https://onlinelearningconsortium.org/insights-from-the-field-mobility-in-higher-ed/

3. Potential.ly.'Support your students in their professional development and career readiness journey.Smart platform that brings all elements of career readiness and professional development together. Build professional development engagement (CPD) into the student experience the moment students arrive'

https://www.potential.ly

4. The York Technology Enhanced Learning Handbook. This is a well constructed 'guide' for academics wanting to create opportunities for students to learn with the support of technology.
Extract from the Handbook:
'The York Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) Handbook acts as a companion to your teaching practice'

Although the focus is on York University environs, the ideas , suggestions and guides can easily be adopted by your own institutions[remember to acknowledge sources]

http://tinyurl.com/yb6buwun

5.Exploring the Use of E Textbooks in Higher Education: A Multiyear Study. This is a report from Educause in which the authors identify key takeaways as:

'A four-year university-wide study of students' e-textbook practices found that e textbook use has increased, particularly among younger students.

The major barriers , including a student preference for print and unfamiliarity with e textbooks ,sh ow signs of being alleviated.

Other factors related to mobile device access and pedagogically effective e textbooks show little change over the study period.

Instructor practices have improved, but there is still room for growth, with implications for focused professional development.

Read the full comprehensive report and evaluate the statistics in relation to your own experiences.

http://tinyurl.com/ybtvduq3

6. This is the resources page for the presentation'After the Lawyers Leave: How Wichita State is Growing a Culture of Access,' Why this link? I found it interesting that the resources developed were as a result of a student filing a civil rights case against the University in relation to accessibility. Some useful stuff buried in these pages. Maybe help others to examine and improve the accessibility of their own resources.

http://tinyurl.com/ydeuslqb

7.ESL resources. There are many on the Web and of varying quality. This site provides a wealth of material in a wide range of subjects. All examples are downloadable, printable and as far as I can tell, are FREE. Worth bookmarking and using.

https://en.islcollective.com

And

for more free resources , peruse the photocopiables:

http://www.photocopiables.com

8. UNESCO/COL OER Knowledge Cloud: A developing resource and work in progress providing free access to a range of learning and teaching materials domiciled in the open educational resources domain.
'The OER Knowledge Cloud has been established to identify, collect, preserve and disseminate available documents of enduring value to researchers, industry, government, scholars, writers, historians, journalists and informal learners'.

https://oerknowledgecloud.org

9.A living touch screen made from bacteria and Gold? Is this the way of the future? A team at Dukes University have developed a bacteria made, human enhanced electrical circuit that works like the pressure sensor on our touch screens.
This is a very interesting article signalling the potential for huge changes in technology driven by the use of 'living' organisms.

http://tinyurl.com/ybjdxr36

10.Second issue of the International Journal for Students as Partners (IJSaP). This is a new journal and one that is raising some interesting issues around the paricipation and contribution student can and do make in the education arena. I found the article 'Partnership in Practice: Implementing Healey's Conceptual Model' particularly interesting as it involved a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) project, highly topical at this moment in time as NZ will be hosting a symposium on the subject in February 2018 (see below)

https://mulpress.mcmaster.ca/ijsap/issue/view/318

11. CONFERENCES

11.1 ASCILITE 2017: 34rd International Conference on Innovation, Practice and Research in the Use of Educational Technologies in Tertiary Education.
The ASCILITE 2017 conference will be held at the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba from 4 to 6 December 2017.

G'day

it's been a mixed September and a wet one in NZ. Now we are into daylight saving, Summer apparently, is around the corner. Wish I knew which one. SoTEL 2018 has been keeping me busy this month dealing with submissions and related activities. Still had time for a 12km walk with the dog around the local estuary and down to the beaches. The veggies have gone into the garden, potatoes, tomatoes, beetroot (a favourite of Alan Levine (not)), beans and cucumber. Don't think the hail the other day helped them much. However, the hail did enable some catch up reading on AR and the latest NMC report.

Have a good look at the student digital experience tracker from Jisc, well worth geting involved.

In the posting this month there are links to learning analytics, neuromyths, open textbooks, digital tracker, augmented and virtual reality, design guide for open online courses, some aspects of feedback, digital library, behind the NMC Horizon report., conferences,New Zealand events and the odd one out.

Maybe some fireworks in the posting next month!

In the posting this month there are links to learning analytics, neuromyths, open textbooks, student digital experience tracker, augmented and virtual reality, design guide for open online courses, some aspects of feedback, digital library, behind the NMC Horizon report., conferences,New Zealand events and the odd one out.

1. [Infographic] Augmented and Virtual Reality Are Revolutionizing Education and Student Learning. From the India Edutech review site. A useful article on Augmented reality which includes a well designed infographic from New Jersey Institute of Technology.

http://tinyurl.com/y9hav6w6

2. Why mythbusting fails: A guide to influencing education with science. An interesting article that looks at 'neuromyths' such as learning styles and why people believe in them. Something to do with 'cultural cognition' apparently. Good read

http://tinyurl.com/y7lzs5jd

3. A Design Guide for Open Online Courses. Here is a resource which is well worth having. A well written and constructed guide providing a clear account of principles and techniques used to develop the online course 'Citizen Maths'.Highlights the fundamentals for planning and creating online courses [Thanks to Seb Schmoller for providing the information]

https://repository.alt.ac.uk/2373/

4.The Handbook of Learning Analytics: First Edition
Editors: Charles Lang, George Siemens, Alyssa Wise, Dragan Gaševi;
This is a FREE book you can download and peruse at leisure. Worth exploring if you are interested or into learning analytics.
Extract from the site:
'This volume provides an extensive view into what we know now about learning analytics from the perspective of leading experts in the field. I am confident that you will find here research that will simultaneously excite you with ideas about how we can change the world of education and frustrate you with the evidence of the challenges ahead for doing so. We invite you to join us in this adventure.
Stephanie Teasley
President, Society for Learning Analytics Research'

https://solaresearch.org/hla-17/

5. Open textbookLibrary. I'm always looking for free material that has a quality stamp and meets the needs of a range of learners. There are an ever increasing range of resources on the Web and this one is another worth perusing and using. I've made the link to an open textbook on anatomy and physiology of animals as it was created in Otago in New Zealand. Got to promote good stuff from here.

https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks/BookDetail.aspx?bookId=348

6.Student digital experience tracker: GET INVOLVED! Jisc would welcome you and be delighted if your institution became involved in contributing to the digital tracker, making it a truly international and valuable resource.

There are different versions of the Tracker available for international participants: (a) Higher Education university students, (b) further education/VET students, (c) skills/work-based learning, and (d) for those learners learning exclusively online.

The initial sign up form is available from

https://jisc-beta.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/tracker-signup-2017-18

A total of 150 institutions, including some from Australia, South Africa and Brazil, have already signed up to participate during 2017 to 2018. Let's have some from New Zealand!!

Those institutions who register interest in the initial form will be contacted with further details, confirmation form, and links to the new question set in the next few weeks.

The pilot project went very well last year with 74 UK institutions and 10 international institutions that used the Tracker survey.

Read more about the digital experience tracker from the report: Student digital experience tracker:A survey of students' expectations and experiences of technology. The student digital experience tracker is a survey tool that enables organisations to explore how students use and feel about the digital tools, environment and support they provide.Mostly about students in UK education Institutions but with some input from international organisations.

New Zealand is in the process of adopting a 'Digital Curriculum'. Some of the data in the JISC report could be useful as a barometer of change.

https://www.jisc.ac.uk/rd/projects/student-digital-experience-tracker

7.Immediate and Delayed Consequences in Branching Scenarios. An interesting and useful article on the use or not of feedback in various situations. I'm a strong advocate of feedback and feedforward and don't think enough is done in many educational environments to enable student to know how well they are doing.Using two way feedback to activate feedforward for potential or real change can invoke a real difference in learning and achievement for all. There are some other articles worth perusing on the same subject on the site.

http://tinyurl.com/y8r9yzqm

8. HathiTrust digital library. Apparently the library now contains more than 15.7 million volumes. Taking into account multi volume journals and duplicate copies, that's about 8 million unique items, about 95 percent of them from Google's original scanning project.Lots of material from the early 19th century if you are into historical stuff. Impressive and worth book marking. Some material can't be accessed onion due to copyright restrictions , but there are plenty of things to explore. I had an extensive look at the history of English humour in the 19th century; fascinating

https://www.hathitrust.org

9. Why AR? A short blog article by Clark Quinn that looks at some of the possibilities for effective use of AR in learning and performance

https://blog.learnlets.com/2017/09/why-ar/

10. Peering behind the Horizon. Quite an interesting look behind the scenes of the NMC/ Educause Horizon report 2017. If you haven't read the report , this article might spur you into action to have a closer look at the Wiki and how the report evolved and who was involved.

G'Day

spring is in the air this side of the globe, time to dump the work stuff and plant the veggies, well for a short time at least;Garlic is doing well.

Busy month contributing to the organisation of
SoTEL 2018
which is shaping up very nicely. More information in this posting. Couple of papers to review and some long walks with the dog, about 7.5 Km the other day. Lots of time for thinking. Next project looks like helping to organise an event for a group of medical practitioners. Be good for my health I am told.

In the postingthis month, there are links to Analytics, competencies, technology trends in training, open source authoring tool, anatomy and physiology resources, digital literacy, Google Classroom, Mooc's, deep learning, resource book bank,K12 Horizon report, conferences, NZ events, and the odd one out.

That's it for this month

1.ADAPT. Here is a free open source tool that should appeal to many innovative and passionate educators who want to create more effective learning environments and materials for their students. The fact that it enables multi device material is a real bonus, especially if you are a mobiliser.
From the site 'Adapt is a free and easy to use e-learning authoring tool that creates fully responsive, multi-device, HTML5 elearning content using the award-winning Adapt developer framework'.

https://www.adaptlearning.org

2.Why Google Analytics is the next thing you should be adding to your LMS. Good advice? How useful are analytics in making a difference to how you focus and present educational resources and materials to your students? Will this make a difference?

http://tinyurl.com/y7e76g5o

3.The Training Industry Magazine: TRENDS 2017. There are several papers that are worth reading, digesting and pondering on as technology trends continue to make an impact in the training environment.

http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/trainingindustry/tiq_20171112/index.php#/4

4.Measuring 21st Century Competencies: Guidance for Educators. A very comprehensive and practical guide which is worth perusing.

http://asiasociety.org/files/gcen-measuring21cskills.pdf

AND
This, although a little older but not necessarily dated, I think complements the above.

https://nces.ed.gov/pubs2002/2002159.pdf

5.Anatomy and Physiology animation videos. Here is a huge collection of short videos with associated explanations . A very useful resource for all who teach health science and related courses. There are lots of other videos apart from A and P.The full body system in 3D is quite well done . Ads are included in some videos.

http://blausen.com/en/topic/anatomy--physiology/

6. Google Classroom. Are you using Google Classroom this year and do you need some help? This 'suite' of training programmes will greatly assist your development of appropriate skills to use the G Suite effectively in your classroom.

https://edutrainingcenter.withgoogle.com/training

7.SECOND HORIZON PROJECT STRATEGIC BRIEF ON DIGITAL LITERACY: 'This independent research builds upon the established baseline definitions of digital literacy from the 2016 brief, examining digital literacy through a global and discipline specific lens to reveal new contexts that are shaping the way learners create, discover, and critically assess digital content'. Worth perusing as it goes into some depth on the meaning of digital literacy and its role/importance in modern education and society.

http://tinyurl.com/y8a53lu2

8.Deep Learning:Shaking the Foundations. An interesting and useful paper describing and presenting examples of deep learning and what differences it can make. If you want to follow the gathering crowd read, absorb and act on the 10 Ways to Make Deep Learning Live.

http://npdl.global/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/DL-shaking-the-foundation.pdf

9. Openstax. This could be a useful addition to your resource bank for your students , and possibly you as well. All books are free and there is a reasonable range available to download. Explore and take advantage of an excellent resource.

https://openstax.org/subjects/science

10. What if MOOCs Revolutionize Education After All? I found this an interesting article and one that raises some useful points about Mooc's and how students learn. As an aside I thought the statemen t'moving a university is a little bit like moving a cemetery. You can't expect any help from the inhabitants'. was quite pertinent in the ever changing world of technology in education. Listen to the podcast if you have time.
